A New Scam Site: Bitcoin Generator
Well, this is interesting.
It's the first time I've seen this particular expression of the give-a-little-get-a-lot scam.
Just like the recently started Twitter impersonation scams I wrote about the other day, this is another variation of the Advance Fee Scam.
This version of the scam I came across is on a site called Bitcoin Generator located at bitgenx-dot-pro.
Let's have a look.
How the Scam Works
This scam is clearly designed to prey on people who have little knowledge about how crypto works.
The site claims to be able to "Inject Exploits to Bitcoin Pools and Blockchain" and is willing to give you the proceeds, all for doing absolutely nothing on your part. What a great deal!
Just enter your Bitcoin address, click the button, wait for the process to complete, then BAM! You've got BTC on the way to your wallet.
You just need to send a little Bitcoin (0.002 BTC) their way first to cover the miners' fee.
Uh huh.
Except, it's all smoke and mirrors.
The chatroom is live, but that's the only thing that's real.
The fancy progress bar is just some pre-defined strings and percentages stored in a separate Javascript file.
The toaster notifications claiming payouts to different IPs? Same deal, different Javascript file.
Nothing is coming your way, but if you send your "miner fee", you're out 0.002 BTC.
I Did Some Digging
Being curious, beyond looking at the site source code, I decided to look into Bitcoin address and the domain.
The Bitcoin address first received funds on September 12, 2017 and there's been somewhat of a steady stream of deposits and withdraws since them, mostly decreasing in amount.
The 0.002 BTC deposits started on February 6 and the domain was registered on January 30, 2018, so, it looks like it didn't take long to build and promote this site.
It also appears that the address has been involved in other dealings, although it's not obvious what.
In total, just over 24 BTC has moved through this address, with most of that taking place before February 6.
In total this scam seems have to netted about 0.314 BTC so far; there's about 0.25 BTC sitting in there at the moment.
Not surprisingly, there have been exactly 0 transactions that looks like payouts from this address since the 0.002 BTC deposits started. Maybe the payouts come from a different address? Not likely, and I'm not about to put up my BTC to find out.
So, 0.314 BTC isn't a massive amount, but the site is still new and there are many people desperate to recoup losses and/or make an easy buck.
So, be careful out there. There are no free rides to big wins.
