Same-Sex Marriage just the start

in #same7 years ago (edited)

It is a historic day in Australia's history as legislation passed to legalise same-sex marriage. The majority of Australian's wanted this decision and the announcement has been met with jubilation.

Just like the 25 countries before them, Australia has taken a step to eliminate discrimination based on someone's sexual preference. However, this is only the start of change.

Some of the public who voted no will not take the decision lightly, there will be the naysayers, and they will be vocal about their thoughts, using social media and journalist positions to throw hate at those rejoicing.

This decision will not stop the hate and violence towards those who have a sexual attraction to the same sex, but they must stay strong and they must stay humble. They must look to the acceptance of the 61.6% of Australian's that voted 'yes' in the same-sex marriage postal survey and take the high ground, knowing that the majority of the population are in support of their unions.

To those who disagree with the decision, you are most definitely allowed your opinion and no-one can say that your opinion is wrong. If you are happily married in a heterosexual relationship, the legislation really doesn't change anything for you does it? It does not directly impact your relationship. If you disagree because of religious reasons, that is also fine, because when it comes to judgement day each of us will be judged accordingly and we can not predict what that judgement will be.

It's about bloody time the politicians took notice of the public's opinion, good job Australia!
