⚠️ SAFETY TIP #8: PRESSURE🔃

Hello everyone, today our hazard Identification is "Pressure ".

Pressure is a common energy source in our daily lives. Apart from the pressure from industrial equipments, a very important category of pressure we most times don't consider is self-induced pressure resulting from our daily life activities. Well, we won't be dwelling on that today.

Before going further, let's try to define what pressure is.

Pressure can be defined as the energy applied by liquid or gas that has been compressed or is under a vacuum. Examples of systems where you can find pressure include: pressure piping, compressed cylinders, control lines, vessels, tanks, hoses, pneumatic/hydraulic equipment and body cavities.

There is usually large amounts of stored energy in most of the systems listed above. Sudden and uncontrolled release of this energy can cause serious injury and/or a fatality

Pressure, although very useful, can be very hazardous when not properly controlled. Critical injury and damage can occur with relatively little pressure.
It is your responsibility to comply with all applicable rules and regulations concerning the use of pressurized equipment and systems.

Inadequate repairs or modifications, poor equipment maintenance, unsafe systems of work, operator error, poor training and supervision, poor installation; and Poor equipment and/or system design are all regarded as principle causes of pressure-related incidents

In an event of a pressure-related incident, people can be impacted from explosion blast or release of compressed liquid or gas; parts of equipment that fail or any flying debris. Also, contact with released liquid or gas, such as steam; and fire resulting from the escape of flammable liquids or gases are most likely.

RISK REDUCTION FACTORS

The risk from the failure of pressurized systems is high and as such should be mitigated. Mitigating factors include:

  • Staying away from pressure lines

  • Obeying signs and barriers

*Provision of safe and suitable equipments

  • Knowing the safe operating conditions of equipments

  • Fitting suitable protective devices and ensuring they function properly

  • Carrying out suitable maintenance

*Making provision for appropriate training and supervision

  • Having equipments properly examined and

  • Involving competent persons only

You can read some real life pressure incidents from https://www.aiha.org/get-involved/VolunteerGroups/LabHSCommittee/Pages/Pressure-Hazard-Incidents.aspx

As you carry out your duties today both at home or in your work place, especially in high risk job environments like offshore drilling rigs and construction sites, be mindful of Pressure hazards. Always ask yourself "what if?" "How can I get hurt in the task I'm currently carrying out?" Be very conscious of your environment. Train yourself to have a high sense of situational awareness. Always obey signs and barriers

"STAY ALERT, AND STAY ALIVE!"
