Ukraine counter-offensive against Russia yields only small gains in first 2 months
The war in Ukraine has reached a critical juncture with significant implications for the country's future and European security. Over the past 18 months, Ukraine has largely defended itself against Russia's invasion, preventing further territorial gains by Moscow.
However, this summer, Ukraine has launched a counter-offensive with the aid of Western military equipment to reclaim the territories captured by Russia in the east and south. Despite their efforts, not much has changed since the counter-offensive began, as Russia still occupies a substantial portion of Ukraine, including cities like Donetsk and Mariupol.
Ukraine has achieved some small victories, retaking the village of Staromaiorske in Donetsk and gaining ground in areas like Bakhmut and Zaporizhzhia. But overall progress has been slow due to Russia's extensive fortifications and defensive tactics, including the use of anti-tank mines and booby-trapping trenches.
As the Ukrainian troops push forward, Russia's response has been innovative and effective in defense, making the situation more challenging. Ukraine has strengthened its armed forces and acquired better equipment, but time is not on their side. The approaching rainy season will hinder advances, and the upcoming US presidential election cycle may impact the level of support from the US and NATO.
For Ukraine, the clock is ticking, while Russia aims to maintain its hold on the illegally seized territories. The outcome of this conflict remains uncertain, and its resolution will have significant ramifications for the region and beyond.
