A crazy thing! A Russian buys power plants to mine cryptocurrencies
A Russian private investor has the idea of creating a data center and using cryptocurrency mining centers.
Russian businessman Aleksei Kolesnik has bought two thermoelectric plants in the Perm region and Udmurtia to mine cryptocurrencies, reports the Russian newspaper Kommersant (https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/3516547).
In total, the Russian businessman paid about 160 million rubles for the purchase of thermoelectric plants that were not nearly profitable, which is why they were sold.
Although it contemplates its use for cryptocurrency mining, its general idea is to create a data center to conserve information on Internet traffic. "We are examining the cryptocurrency variant, but we are not trying to develop it before a legislative base is adopted," says Aleksei Kolesnik.
Now the cryptocurrency status in Russia is not defined, so the employer awaits the decision of authorities. According to the source, the creation of the data center is linked to the growing increase in the requirements for the deposit of computer data by the Russian Government.
Cryptocurrency mining consumes more and more resources every day, particularly electricity, since high-power computers that require a lot of energy are needed to maintain the process.
