  1. France and Germany say they will oppose Facebook’s digital currency - The countries argue that monetary power is inherent to the sovereignty of a nation, and cannot be claimed by any private company. They also encourage the European Central Bank (ECB) to "work on issues around possible public digital currency solutions", suggesting that the ECB is already quietly working on its own digital currency project.

  2. Streaming makes up 80 percent of the music industry’s revenue - According to the Recording Industry of America, streaming revenue was up 26% during the first six months of 2019 to a total of $4.3 billion. Including paid subscriptions and ad revenue, this comprises 80% of the industry's overall revenue. Vinyl and CD sales also grew, by 5% and 13%, respectively. h/t Daniel Lemire

  3. What streaming means for the future of entertainment | Emmett Shear - In thiis TED talk, Twitch founder and CEO, Emmett Shear talks about how the constantly reduced costs of media make it increasingly likely for people to consume online content alone, in their own homes and suggests that this is leading to a loss of community and connection in human societies. He goes on to say that the only major force in media that is working to counteract that trend is the phenomenon of online multiplayer video games. He says that gamers enjoy a shared experience, and they're not satisfied with passive media consumption. Continuing this theme, he asks his audience to think of Twitch as, not content producers streaming to content consumers, but instead as millions of campfires where people meet each other to share an experience. The talk also includes an interactive dialog with one of those Twitch campfires. In short, Shear suggests that the importance of streaming is the capabilities to collaborate and recreate human communities, in a phenomenon that he calls, "multiplayer entertainment". He also notes that he thinks we can see the future of technology with some of Twitch's emerging trends. One trend that he highlights is the emergence of multiplayer sports engagement, where communities of people watch sporting events together online.

  4. AT&T CEO's rumored exit reportedly triggered activist hedge fund Elliott Management's recent investment (T) - After hearing a rumor that AT&T CEO, Randall Stephenson, was making exit plans, Elliott Management unveiled a $3.2 billion investment in the firm. Elliott's head of US Equity activism reportedly said that the company wants a say in the future direction of the $270 billion dollar company. He also said that the firm's shares have been under-performing for a long time, mostly as a result of its merger and acquisition (M&A) strategy.

  5. STEEM A Joust and Historical Days in Den Haag (Netherlands) - In this Steem essay, @bengy tells us about his day in Den Haag in the Netherlands, for the Monumentendagen, which is a day when people can get into all of the museums for free. In addition to the Monumentenendagen, it was also the Historical Days for Den Haag, which drew a number of traditional dutch exhibits and activities. The post includes photos and descriptions of exhibits like medieval jousting, combat between a horse-rider and a foot soldier, melee fighters, a parade, and other historical activities. @bengy also mentions his own University experience as a member of a medieval club.
