RE: [RPG-Review] Lasers & Feelings
Lasers and Feelings is an incredible game, and I'm glad that somebody else has stumbled onto it and seen the interesting, compelling parts of it. The fact that the players are always engaged in thinking about how to tie the mechanical resolution to things about their character, justifying using the ways that they've described the characters being successful to literally be successful – that is a really powerful part of the design.
The Oracle portion of the mechanics (the GM inspiration system) have this surprising quality of turning out exciting results on a regular basis. Ridiculous results, sure! But those are often some of the best channels to play.
Though I would have to say that Lasers and Feelings encourages the players to engage with the action all around them by making it relatively clear that they will succeed in their attempts, so long as they continue to engage with the fiction aggressively.
It's amazingly freeing not to have to worry about your character looking stupid or dying just because you want to do something interesting.
A lot of more traditional systems have confused "challenge" with "difficulty." They think that as long as tasks are hard to achieve, challenge has been provided – and that is enough. That position makes the assumption that all challenge is simply derived from not getting what you want most of the time. Even a cursory thought outlines why that is not true.
If you haven't tried of the Neon and Chrome version, I definitely encourage you to do so. In a real sense, you can get pretty deep into the cyberpunk genre without worrying over much about most of the crunchy bits that have typified cyberpunk in RPGs, and the side effects can be amazing.
