Sprintrits in ancient Rome

in #rome6 years ago

In the Roman Empire, they used coins known as spintriae. They usually depict erotic scenes or sexual characters. Why were they needed?

Historians have testified that during the first century AD Roman emperors forbade the importation of a coin with the image of the ruler in the bordes - this could lead to accusation of betrayal and even to the death penalty.

However, there is no evidence that such coins were used for payment: they were more like tokens for pass.
