Rohingya crisis: Commonwealth urges Hasina to stand by
Trudeau called on the first executive session on Thursday after the inauguration of the summit of the Commonwealth government chiefs.
Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said, after the presentation of the Commonwealth Secretary General in the session, UK Prime Minister Teriza May open the floor for the statements of various leaders.
"Trudeau said at that time, the remarkable leadership qualities of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in dealing with the situation in the Rohingya have shown that the Commonwealth leaders have to support her.
At the end of last year, the Rohingyas started fleeing to Bangladesh in the Rakhine province, due to the atrocities of Myanmar government forces. Over the past few months, more than six million Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh. Accordingly, the number of Rohingyas fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh reached 11 lakhs.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that the international community should put more pressure on Myanmar to get Rohingyas quickly in a seminar on Tuesday.
He said that the agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar has been taken to get the Rohingyas back, and Myanmar has agreed.
"Myanmar showed interest in taking them back (Rohingya). But in reality it does not. Therefore, the international community should put more pressure on them.
