Project Drockoon (Rocket-Balloon-Drone hybrid)
I've been working on model rockets and drones for quite a long time now.
After testing out different solid rocket motors, trying the R-candy fuel (KNO3-Sugar) etc it seems there should be a change in my approach to get my rocket into the edge of the space efficiently and cost effectively.
I came up with an idea of first getting the rocket to a certain altitude with the help of a helium balloon and then igniting it, thereby saving fuel. After googling a bit I came across with this term 'Rockoon'
A Rockoon is a hybrid of rocket and balloon that unlike a rocket is first carried into the upper atmosphere by a gas-filled balloon, then separated from the balloon and ignited. This allows the rocket to achieve a higher altitude, as the rocket does not have to move under power through the lower and thicker layers of the atmosphere.
A serious disadvantage of it is that balloons cannot be steered. Also a stable platform would thus be required for ignition of the next stage rocket. In order to overcome this steering disability either a drone or autonomous rocket thrusters can be used. Either a drone can carry the rocket to a calculated altitude. (Keeping in mind this can be done only to a certain altitude since the higher you go, less dense the air is. It would thus be difficult for a drone to fly in near vacuum conditions)
Or, a balloon can carry the rocket along with thrusters so as to maintain the desired trajectory.
