Introduction

In this work we will study rock and pop in the 20th century, as well as their influence on the formation of society and global culture. On July 13, World Rock Day is celebrated (although worldwide, it is only in Brazil), in which two concerts are held, each lasting twelve hours, in order to raise money for donations to assist in the fight to hunger in Ethiopia.

What is it and how did the rock come about?

Rock came in the mid-1950s, with a great influence of the blues, we can say that it is the blues itself, only more accelerated and more variety of instruments, and more "electronic." It had its cradle in the United States, when the first expressions of the rock appeared, like Bill Halley and His Comets and Elvis, the king of the rock. The main instruments used in rock are vocal, electric guitar, electric bass, batter, keyboard and digital synthesizers (from 1970). One of the great changes occurred was the increase in the number of bands, and leaving aside the individual artists. Rock is a movement that, in its essence, criticizes and questions the moral values of society, and so is almost always seen with a bad eye by most people.
It is divided into subgenres, being: alternative rock, art rock, beat music, britpop, desert rock, experimental rock, garage rock, glam rock, group sounds, grunge, hard rock, heartland rock, indie rock, jungle pop, krautrock, madchester, post-blitpop, power pop, progressive rock, protopunk, psychedelia, punk rock, rock noir, soft rock, southern rock, surf, symphonic.
The main expressions of this genre were Oasis, Nirvana, Queen, Guns n 'Roses, Iron Maden, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Metalica, Pink Floyd, REM, Knot, U2, ACDC, Slipknot, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, System Of A Down, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, The Who, The Doors, The Clash, Scorpions, The Animals, Aerosmith, among many others.

In Brazil, we had successes like the Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Titãs, Legião Urbana, Capital Inicial, CPM22, Mamonas Assassinas, Los Hermanos, Angra, Engineers of Hawaii, etc.

Rock in the formation of society and culture of the twentieth century

Rock had its beginning a few years after the conflict of World War II, which was of great importance for the advent of this musical style. With the end of the War, the United States emerged as the world's greatest power, so that its culture (including music) spread rapidly across the globe. The cultural industry also played an important role in the explosion of rock music, with movie soundtracks, album and record sales in the millions, recording and playing on the radio, forming its success among young people and adults. The bands sang critiques of the events of their times, such as the Vietnam War, with C'era una ragazzo che e me amava i Beatles and i Rolling Stones by Gianni Morandi: The Conflict of the Irish, with the success Sunday Bloody Sunday of U2; in addition to educational models, with Pink Floyd's The Wall, human feelings and social relationships, Oasis's Do not Look Back in Anger, among others.

Main countries

As has been said, rock began in the United States as an adaptation of the blues to the musical style of the time. But it was in England that some of the biggest bands of the beginning of the genre appeared. When they heard the first rocks, some English youngsters became interested and created their groups, initially with the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Who. Later we would see Pink Floyd, Queen and Oasis, for example. However, rock was not limited to the English-speaking world alone. Several bands appeared in Brasl, such as Legião Urbana and Paralamas do Sucesso, in France, as Noir Désir, in Germany, with the Kraturock movement, and in Argentina, with Los Cinco Latinos, for example. In this way we can evaluate rock as a global and globalized movement, present until the present day.
