Minnie the Moocher. A 1932 rare cartoon featuring Betty Boop and Cab Calloway

Uno dei personaggi dei cartoni animati, più famosi e discussi di tutti i tempi è stato, senza alcun dubbio, Betty Boop. La simpatica e affascinante eroina, creata dai fratelli Fleischer. Betty debuttò il 9 agosto 1930, con le orecchie da cagnolina, in Dizzy Dishes, un cartone in bianco e nero della durata di appena 6 minuti. Negli anni 30, la musica Jazz impazzava e Cab Calloway, famoso cantante, musicista e attore, che a quei tempi dirigeva l'orchestra del Cotton Club, il noto night club di New York, nel 1931 incise una delle sue canzoni più famose, Minnie the Moocher, che fu utilizzata dai fratelli Fleischer in un cartone animato dove Betty Boop impersonificava l'impicciona.

One of the most famous and discussed cartoon characters of all time was, without a doubt, Betty Boop. The nice and charming heroine, created by the Fleischer brothers. Betty made her debut on August 9th 1930, with dog's ears, in Dizzy Dishes , a 6-minute black and white cartoon. In the 1930s, Jazz music raged and Cab Calloway , famous singer, musician and actor, who at the time was directing the the Cotton Club orchestra, the well known night club of New York, in 1931 recorded one of his most famous songs, Minnie the Moocher , which was used by the Fleischer brothers in a cartoon where Betty Boop played the Moocher.

In questo raro cartoon del 1932, Betty Boop fugge da casa con il suo amico "Bimbo" e finisce nella tana di un tricheco, che canta la canzone "Minnie the Moocher" con la voce di Cab Calloway, con stile languido e malinconico. Nella grotta in cui si svolge la vicenda, appaiono personaggi inquietanti quali scheletri, fantasmi e altre creature strane e spaventose. Betty e Bimbo, vengono coinvolti in una macabra danza e alla fine, una strega malvagia, insieme ad una schiera di demonietti, li perseguiterà fino a casa. La morale che viene fuori, alla fine del cartone animato, lascia intendere che il luogo più sicuro, resta sempre la propria casa.
