Bible quote: When a righteous man was sold, wisdom did not desert him, but delivered him from sin. Wisdom 10:13
Although the Book of Wisdom is a sapiential book traditionally attributed to King Solomon, some authors maintain that its author was a Greek-speaking Israelite who lived in the first century BC. In this book, the wise author of the book taught that although wisdom is a common legacy to all humanity, wisdom belongs especially to Israel, which is the heir of the law of Moses.
And so after a long speech where the wise man expressed that wisdom is a gift from God, and that men must seek this excellence to achieve true life, the wise man taught how this personified wisdom acted in the history of the people of Israel to carry out God's plan in the world.
The book then goes on to teach how this mysterious wisdom acted in the beginnings of humanity, with Adam and Eve, with Cain and Abel, and even Noah who escaped from the destruction of the universal flood, as recounted in the Book of Genesis.
But then the Book of Wisdom in the Bible makes a special mention of Joseph, one of Jacob's sons, metaphorically recounting his story and how he was blessed by God to fulfill a spiritual mission assigned by the Lord, with these wise words:
"When a righteous man was sold, wisdom did not desert him,
but delivered him from sin.
She descended with him into the dungeon,
and when he was in prison she did not leave him,
until she brought him the sceptre of a kingdom
and authority over his masters" Wisdom 10:13-14.
With this quote, the wise man taught that those who fear God with their hearts should not be carried away by fear as human passion but act with confidence and security, because God watches over the pure of heart. As happened with the character of Job, Joseph's wisdom was tested by God and when the tests were overcome, Joseph was greatly blessed; this is the great spiritual message that the author of the book left when he decided to mention this famous character from the Book of Genesis. Evil may often seem omnipresent in the world, but this does not mean that men should lose faith in God. Wisdom is light and guidance for humanity, and Joseph, with his humility and example, continues to inspire men three thousand years later.
