Dawn of War - review

The first Dawn of War was a revolutionary game, in more ways than one. This is the game that not just popularized but also introduced Warhammer 40000 universe to the wider audience.

I knew about the Warhammer 40000 and was familiar with the basics, but I was not a fan, not until I first saw, heard and then player the game by myself. Just the trailer was enough to pique my interest. The way everything looked, sounded, the massive weapons, armor, bloodshed, all to just plant a flag! It was messy, pointless and glorious in a way that no other game, or any other media made it.

The game follows a Space Marine chapter, the Blood Ravens. For those uninitiated, space marines are genetically engineered super soldiers of the Imperium of Man, clad in massive power armors, able to kill a person with a slap, almost impervious to small calibre fire and able to move faster than a person can track.

They are lead by Captain Gabriel Angelous, who is our main character. He is man who condemned his own homeworld to extreminatus in order to stop a threat. Unlike most other works of fiction, this is only mildly questioned. At the start of the game the player will be fighting Orks, but soon will realize that there are far more dangerous foes then just Orks.

I hope you do not mind me spoiling a game that is more than a decade old, but I would like to talk more about the story and characters. As the game progresses we meet the enigmatic Eldar, an ancient race that once ruled the galaxy for millions of years. As usual, their reasoning for fighting is difficult to understand, is that because we are lowly and stupid, or that they just do not care about us at all, it is up to each person to determine.

The last participant of this war are the Chaos Space marines. The traitors who embraced the dark gods. They are as powerful as the Imperial Space Marines and are also imbued with ruinous powers. When ever they are on the battlefield it means something big is about to happen and this is not an exception.

The game is a RTS with base building, the player has to capture strategic locations in order to gain more resources. With the exception of one, every other strategic location can be strengthened with a listening post, that can be upgraded with weapons. This locations are necessary for map control.

One of the most striking aspects of the game is the voice work. Even after more than a decade the game still has some of the best quotes I have ever heard, this includes the sequels. Every single race and faction sounds as it should, this includes the expansions. The only blemish to the amazing voice over are the Dark Eldar, something I will be eternally saddened.

Despite it’s age, I still play Dawn of War and I have finished the game many times over the years. It is the one game that made me a huge fan of Warhammer 40k universe. Because of all of that, I recommend this game to anyone who likes RTS games, but do not mind it looking old.

It is great to see another fellow Dawn of War fan here on steemit. It is also one of my favorite games ever. Don't know if you know about Ultimate Apocalypse mod for Soulstorm. Your mind will be blown once you see all the stuff that is added to the base game. And you got yourself a brand new follower :)

Thanks :) I'm familiar with that, also with Firestorm over Kronus mod, also a great mod :)

Can't wait for Dawn of War 3 even though only 3 basic races will be playable. Game needs some Necron or Chaos action to be a true Dawn of War game. Also my favorite Imperial Guards who knows will they ever be playable in DoW3. Fun times ahead for WH40k and Dawn of War for sure.

I like Imperial Guard as well, I like Orks even more :)

It's very beautiful game..
Great job dear @thewriteguy :)
