Dawn of War: Dark Crusade - review

Dark Crusade is the second expansion for the first Dawn of War game. This is perhaps the most ambitious game in the series and in my opinion, the best of the games in the series.

Dark Crusade adds two more races, Tau and the Necrons, The oldest and the youngest race of Warhammer 40 000 universes, at least counting the major players in the galaxy. The campaign is changed to a risk style map, where the player is tasked to conquer a planet, Cronus. The first thing I thought when playing the game is how much the whole scenario reminded me of the Fall of Medusa V campaign. A whole lot of races and factions battling on a planet.

The Tau are a young race. They are very idealistic and fight for the concept of The Greater Good. They are the only faction in Warhammer 40 000 that welcomes other races into it. They rely on long-range and advanced technologies to fight.

The Necrons, on the other hand, are the oldest still existing race in the universe. I avoided saying living because they are not living. Not anymore at least. They use arcane, strange and ancient technologies to fight. They are the slowest race in the game but can be unstoppable if let to fully gear up for war.

There are two big additions to the franchise, two whole new races Tau and the Necrons, as well as a new type of campaign. The new campaign is a Risk-style planetary conquest. This is a good thing, but also can be considered a bad thing.

The new campaign map gives a lot of replayability to the game. As it allows the player to win in several ways. They can always attack someone else first. This also adds a problem with the story.

It is inevitably diluted. As it has to accommodate all of the races doing the same thing. Fighting the same battles, just in a different way.

Despite everything, Warhammer 40000 Dawn of War Dark Crusade is, in my opinion, the best game in the Dawn of War series. Those few story moments and banter during the stronghold battles is what made the game fun. The gameplay and the way the battles are fought helped a lot.

Sort:

Necrons and Tau add so much variety to the game, it is a shame that DoW 3 only has 3 basic races.

It really is a shame. I hope they will add other races later on. There are roomors that Necrons will be the next race in the expansion.

I don't want to spoil you the campaign for DoW3, but there are some strong clues what the next faction will be :)

I saw the final boss. So it might be some Chaos faction, but we'll see :)
