Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski

The first time I read Charles Bukowski I immediately fell in love with his writing. Being a writer and poet myself, I first read his poetry, and his poetry was much more different than I'd expected a poem to be.

Ham on Rye was the first and only novel by Bukowski that I've read, and what a feast it was. Unfortunately I don't have a physical copy of the book. I settled for an ebook edition instead.

Anyway, the novel is semi-autobiographical and gives us insight into his growing up. Bukowski writes about his own life and struggles with poverty, alcoholism, love and other topics.
His sense of humor isn't exactly pure. In fact, much like Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, it has a dark side.

My score for Ham on Rye

7/10

This book has some really good chapters, and other parts feel a bit lacking and loose. Overall, it was an entertaining read in my opinion.
