Introduction

This saga started in 1996 with the first game developed by Team Gris Gris, Corpse Party. It was made with the RPGMaker tool and had a great reception in Japan.

It has some prequels, manga, films and remasters for differents platforms as 3DS or PSP. However, I´ll focus on the original for PC , Corpse party 98.

The argument

All starts in a rainy day, while some highschool students are telling ghost stories in their highschool. Suddenly, an earthquake shakes the building. When they recover the consciousness, they realise they have been teleported what seems to be a highschool, but it´s pretty old and has an unease mood.

Newer versions of the game expand and changes some aspects of the plot.

The main characters

• Satoshi Mochida
  He´s a kind and gentle guy, that seems a little coward. However, he shows courage when is needed. He is always looking for his little sister´s safety.

• Yuka Mochida
  She´s the little sister of Satoshi. She´s very attached to her brother, relying on him alot.

• Naomi Nakashima
  This characters has a radical change between original Corpse Party and the newer realeses. Nevertheless, in all versions, she seems to have controversial feelings feelings for Satoshi.

• Ayumi Shinokazi
  She´s the class representative and the one who tells the ghost stories. She has a nice realitionship with Naomi. Howerver, she becomes a little harsh when she is with Satoshi.

• Yoshiki Kishinuma
  He´s a problematic guy, but still is good-nature. He looks for Ayumi´s sake at his best.

The gameplay

Corpse party is a lineal survival RPG with a visual novel touch, focused in exploration of the building and interact with specific items. The story is divided in 5 chapters, where differents characters are shown and some of them are playable (the one mentioned above).

In the exploration we will have two groups, one composed by Satoshi, Naomi and Yuka, and the other one with Ayumi and Yoshiki. We´ll be able to change between them in determined points.

We have a life bar with all characters. Some actions can make you loose life. If you get 0HP in a toon, you are taken to the game over scene. However, there are more than one ends (there are a true ending a some wrong) that depends of the characters that die in certains circunstances.

Personal opinion

I love this saga. In fact, I´m currently re-playing the games, so that inspired me to make this review.
The first time I played this game, I thought it would have a shabby gameplay and a poor story. It wasn´t like that. Every new game released I played, the better the developers did. Little by little, the lore grew and the gameplay became more challenging.
