Retro Games Top 5 - Part 1 - NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)

I have said it many times, the 80's and 90's was the golden age of gaming. The older generation among us will know what I mean, even the younger ones who love the simplicity of the older, retro games.
Its been a very long time since I played any games from the 80's, but I do have some very fond memories of the games I used to play. To that end I recently got myself an emulator so I can re-live my childhood memories all over again. So I put together a list of my top 5 games, I used to play on the Nintendo Entertainment System

5 – Duck Hunt;- Yes I know its the obvious choice but it was the first game I had that came with the NES. The cartridge itself as many of you may know had 2 titles on it. The other being Super Mario Bros. As a kid, being able to use a gun to shoot ducks on the screen seemed like magic. From testing to see how far away I could use it, to getting frustrated and holding it at the screen at point blank range. And that bloody dog. Ha. Very simple game, but entertaining non the less.
Playing it on PC though is not the same, having to use the mouse pointer to shoot, takes some of that magic away.

4 – Ghosts 'n' Goblins;- as a kid, I would find games very upsetting if I couldn't get past a certain part, to the point I would start crying and turn off the console in a tantrum. After some persistence. I would be able to get further in the game and the amount of joy was awesome, it wouldn't matter that I died 2 minutes later. I was very relived that being upset was for nothing.
Only later in life and even playing it now. I found out it was one of the hardest games to play. This game easily deserves a slot in the top 5.

3 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles;- I remember the film and the cartoons very well. Being able to control the turtles was amazing, switching from Mikey to Leonardo, fighting the foot clan and eventually getting to fight Krang. My best friend at the time would always come round after school to play the game with me. Hours upon hours of fun.

2 – Super Mario Bros.;- You wouldn't find any list of top games for the NES without Mario in there. A simple platform game that put your hand to eye coordination to the test. Just like duck hunt, this was the other game that I played first on the NES. Playing every level, having timing runs between myself and my older brother. Then after a few years of playing, I found out that you could skip entire levels by jumping off the screen and running until you found the 3 pipes with the level number above them. Well, that was a game changer for me.

1 – Snakes Revenge;- By far my personal favourite game of all time. I actually have it paused on my second monitor at the moment while I'm doing this write up. Snake revenge is part of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, and was my first taste of a combination of stealth and action. This game influence which games I play to this day. Titles like splinter cell, hitman, assassins creed, the idea of using stealth to complete a game was very alluring. Yes the game has 1 or 2 small issues like, you can pick up ammo in one room exit, then go back in and the ammo is there again. But I loved the playability of it and how it was story driven. Anyone who likes retro games. Go and try it. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Now if you will excuse me. I am about a third of the way through Snakes Revenge and I'm almost out of ammo.
