Tsoka, David
David Tsoka loved Art since the age of five. At the age of 15, in Grade 9, he realized he enjoys his Art and crafts more than the other classes. That is when he knew he wanted to be an Artist. David’s inspiration is from the Artist Marco Ciamfanielli, he likes the way he uses ordinary objects and materials like steel and razor wire to create images and public art, for example, his Nelson Mandela Monumental sculpture portrait located near Howick, in KwaZulu- Natal.

David is a talented artist who specializes in creating impressive linocuts depicting both abstract and cubist forms. Linocuts, gives him freedom to explore different mark making. His linocuts are visually bold and have high contrast to images, but also add a sophisticated ambiance to any collection.

My Thoughts
As a student in the early 90's one of the first introductions to printing is through Lino Printing and I must admit, I really didn't enjoy it. It didn't excite me as a medium at all. Now, in 2018, I must also admit that I was an idiot.
A good artist can take any medium and see its potential and make it exciting and modern, a good artist sees beyond the basics of the medium they are being taught.
I wish that as a student, I had had that insight.
I am seeing a lot more lino printing in recent years than I've seen before. Students are using this print medium in exciting new ways, adding etching, monotypes, drawing, embroidery and more.
I've seen the most delicate detailed works to graphic bold works. Realistic portraits or abstract, anything is possible using lino printing as long as you have vision.
I find myself seeking out lino works on exhibition and studying the artists fine cutting work and remembering how I butchered my lino blocks as a student, hacking away with little respect or regard for the medium (what an idiot). I have mentioned before in a previous post something about artists mark making ability and now I'm seeing the amazing mark making ability of lino artists and I'm loving it.
I have new found respect for a medium that is finding a new place in my heart. From loathing to loving, it has taken over 20 years, but my eyes are opened now.
