Hardly Anyone Finishes Their New Resolutions!

Did you know that about 8% of people actually complete their New Year Resolutions? In fact, studies have shown time and again that 80%, well over half, of those people that give themselves a resolution goal failure by February! Here it is the middle of the month and that means that quite a few of us have already given up or failed at our chosen goals.

Why Do We Do This To Ourselves?

I remember for years I said that I was going to quit smoking and then just a couple of days post January 1st, I was lighting up again. We all have our vices! I am not here to judge.

I would like to get you back on track and help you feel like a success. Feeling like a failure is only likely to manifest more of the same and who needs that in their life?

The truth is, you're worth whatever goals that you want to achieve. Thankfully there are a couple of ways to get back on track as well.

First, ditch the resolution and incorporate flexibility.

No one is perfect. Nope, shocker, I know.

Then why do we set ourselves up for failure?

Sociology studies show that competitive people are the most likely to make a New Years resolution. There is a challenge and for some, the pressure is good. However, if you know that your life is hectic or if you have tried your goal a couple of times and not been successful, now is the time to try something else.

Tips for Incorporating Good Habits

  1. There is no need for a full-blown resolution, especially when a much simpler approach will likely work. Focus on creating good habits rather than getting rid of bad ones. Perhaps, instead of not smoking, incorporate walking once a day and drinking more water. Chances are, as you get more healthy, smoking will be one of those unhealthy habits that fall to the wayside. Think of the new habits that you are forming as training for the day when you do quit. You will be learning first hand how hard a habit, even one that you want to create, can be.

  2. Grab a partner, but preferrably one that goes to the gym already... or already does what your goal is. Reaching goals is easier with support, but more difficult when two people are beginning from scratch.

3. Play a sport, join a spin class or do a group activity. This will help you in a similar way as grabbing a partner but you can just show up. This is perhaps even better than the buddy system as you can be involved in the new activity, get to know people and increase your own social interactions. That is probably not one of your resolution goals, but it is generally something most adults needs.
  1. Give yourself time to adapt but don't accept excuses for slacking by being accoubtable to a journal. Writing down your progress, even if it is simply to say that you did nothing, creates the habit of journaling and that is always a good thing!

It is the middle of the month and as it is right now, if you have given up on your resolution there is still time! Try to change things up and resolve to do one good thing at least for yourself. You're worth it. Whatever your goals are, there is support to be had and it isn't difficult to get back on track. All that it requires is that you try again tomorrow!

Good info. I'm trying to make only small changes at a time and not completely change my lifestyle (as I'm pretty sure that will fail sooner or later).
