Praise is like a drug, we receive a little and unless we are conscious of the ill effects (pride) we thoughtlessly seek more, regardless from whom or for what.
I used to wonder why christians gave all credit to God, even if God orchestrates all things (which I believe He does), the person still did the actions, so why not take credit? I think in part the answer is because God is the source of the power which enabled the victory, but also because of what we are discussing here, to avoid seeking praise and stroking ego and fanning the flames of pride.
As Rick Warren said, the right position of humility is as they say, not to think less of yourself, but to think of yourself less. And this goal is set aside when we listen to the praise of fools.
