Pain of First Love

It's the first time he smiles at you,
it's the first time he picks you up for a date,
It's the first time you feel this way about someone, everything he does warms your heart.
It's the first time you truly let your guard down.
It's the first time someone made you feel like the most important thing in the world.
It's the first time you want to give more than you take because his happiness is what makes you happiest.
It's the first time you feel like maybe...just maybe...you could be together forever.

But time passes and all the firsts...gives way to seconds...and thirds, you lose the count, and yet all the things you once found beautiful become routines.
And slowly but suddenly, it's the first time you realize that happiness isn't found; it is earned.

It's the the first time you realize that the person who makes you the happiest can also bring you the most pain but you trust him not to let go.
It's the first time you know what it's like when it's over.
It's the first time you feel completely helpless, like you are reaching something but it just slips through your finger.
It's the first time you realize no matter how much you both wanted it, it would never have worked out in the end.

When first love ends, you wonder if you ever knew what it even was, you wonder if what you had was ever real,
But it's your first love and definitely would't be you last.
You learn to laugh; to cry; to hold on and to let go.
And when you love again, maybe you will love better.
