Bible reflection about man: Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding. Psalm 32:9
The Bible, with its stories and advice, invites men to avoid error and to seek wisdom above all things. Because wisdom, which is a gift from God, is the great provider of man, like Solomon who, after being crowned King of Israel, asked God for a heart that knows how to listen, and as a consequence of this he received everything else, wealth, honor, and glory.
And Psalm 32 is a psalm that takes up this spiritual theme by dedicating its words to the reconciliation of man with the wise Lord. God forgives man his faults when his creature is willing to leave the path of error and accept the light that comes from his eternal wisdom. And this is so because in order for man to be forgiven he must first allow himself to be forgiven; hatred and human passions such as envy make forgiveness impossible. The rite of baptism, as practiced by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, has its origin in this forgiveness, and reconciliation with the creator.
This is why Psalm 32, like the Sermon on the Mount taught by Jesus, begins with two beautiful beatitudes:
"Blessed is the person whose disobedience is forgiven
and whose sin is pardoned.
Blessed is the person whom the LORD no longer accuses of sin
and who has no deceitful thoughts" Psalm 32:1-2.
But then the Bible makes an important reflection about the behavior of man:
"Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you" Psalm 32:9.
What characterizes man and what differentiates him from animals is intelligence, and for this intelligence man must seek the most excellent and the best, that is, the light of the perfect wisdom, and not only the most basic needs that characterize the irrational creatures, that is the animals. Through the gift of understanding, man is reconciled with God and becomes his beloved son, but he who becomes an enemy of God, as happened to King Nebuchadnezzar who suffered from madness, risks losing all reason and living inhumanely due to the lack of intelligence.
