A Father's Day Story - Lesson in here...
Hello again,
This morning, being that it is Father's Day, I was thinking of something to share with my own father to show my gratitude for his constant stream of love and support spanning 22 years now. What came to my mind can only be expressed by a short story and analysis.
Shall we begin?
This story begins at my childhood, more specifically bed time. Every single night and for many, many years my father would tuck me into bed. We had this ridiculous routine where he would layer my blankets over my little body, one by one. With each layer, he'd explain to me its significance.
"First, you get your thin layer." he would say with a cheeky smile on his face.
"Its extra snuggly and soft so you can stay nice and cozy."
The thin layer was my favorite of all layers because it was indeed extremely soft and cozy.
"Next, you get your thermal protection blanket!"
Every single time he would use those exact words. The words would leave his mouth in such a silly tone and I would always laugh, but he emphasized its importance for trapping heat given its pockets for hot air to gather.
"And lastly!!! The super-snuffaluffagus blanket to keep you and your blankets in place."
This was a joke because as a child I was an incredibly restless sleeper - he would call me Spiderman for this reason.
This routine was so sincere and meaningful to me that I carry the memory still over a decade later.
It brings me tremendous joy. :')
The lesson:
As I grew older I never shook this memory. Even to this day I can feel the love he displayed through it.
That is the simple lesson.
Looking into it further, this goofy little display of affection taught me something very huge. I've reduced it to the following message:
Life is not as simple as "blankets keep you warm at night." There are layers to this game, and to succeed you need to be looking for them and master them.
Fathers: You do not realize how long your displays of affection will resonate within your child. I did not realize the above until I looked within myself and back to my own childhood. You have the ability to be your child's greatest source of insight and in the simplest ways ever.
I hope the above can resonate within some of you reading, or maybe I'm being too romantic.
