Best Sugar Cookie Recipe with Royal Icing
This sugar cookie dough is easy to work with, keeps shape, and cooks evenly with perfect edges. This recipe is ideal for cookie decorating.

All-purpose flour- 3 cups
Vanilla extract- 1 tsp
Baking powder- 2 tsp
Salt- ½ tsp
Sugar- 1 cup
Butter- 1 cup
Getting started:
Step 1- preheat oven to 350 F
Step 2- use mixer to cream soften butter and sugar until smooth, at least 2 mins.
Step 3- mix in egg and vanilla
Step 4- in a separate bowl combine baking powder, salt, and flour. Slowly combine with wet ingredients.
Step 5- Divide into workable batches, roll out onto floured surface and cut shapes. (I like my cookies closer to ¼ inch)
Step 6- Bake at 350 F for 6-8 mins. (The smaller trees I cooked for 6 and larger snowflakes 7)
This recipe for royal icing works great, is quick and easy to make, dries glossy and tastes great too!
Ingredients: Royal Icing
Powder sugar- 4 cups
Light Corn Syrup- 6 tsp
Milk or water- 6 tsp (if served within a few hrs milk is a great option, if they are going to sit before eating water is best)
Vanilla extract- ½ tea
Peppermint extract- a couple drops (optional)
Food coloring- I used light green, darker green, light blue and left some frosting white.
Getting started:
Step 1- In a bowl add powder sugar and then add all wet ingredients. (you may need to slightly adjust the ingredient amount, the icing should be slightly softer than toothpaste.
Step 2- divide frosting into how many colors you wish to use, mix in a few drops of food coloring.
Step 3- load frosting into piping bags with a small circle tip.
Decorating cookies- Christmas Tree Cookie
First outline the cookie with royal frosting, then fill in blank part of cookie, tap cookie or use toothpick to smooth out any air pockets. Moving fairly quickly take a different color frosting and draw a squiggle line up the tree, then take a toothpick and run it vertical through the squiggle. Finish with a sprinkle.
Decorating cookies- Snowflake
First outline your cookie with icing and then fill in the center. Smooth out any perfections and allow to dry. Then come back with another color of icing and pipe designs. Allow to dry and enjoy!
I made these cookies for my co-workers before we went on winter break. As always I hope you enjoyed these recipes and how to demonstration. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear from you. Have a great Holiday Season!
I like these simple kind of cookies. I usually make a few classic ones and something that's either new or 'special'. Your cookies turned out very beautiful! I am not so talented when it comes to decorating, especially with icing 😉
Thank you, I really love to bake! As long as the cookies taste good, decorating isn't as important! 😉
That's true ;-) I nominated you yesterday for the B&W challenge. Hope you decide to do it!
Thank you! And thanks for the heads up, I would have probably never realized! :)
