Recipe! American style pancakes

the ingredients I used

So, today I used a recipe to make American-style pancakes!

In my last post, I used a pre-made, just add water pancake mix, and got 6 pancakes out of it! This time, I decided to use a recipe and make it from scratch!

The ingredients:

140g self-raising flour, sieved
200ml semi-skimmed milk
1 large egg
Pinch salt
1 tsp caster sugar

The recipe I used was very clear, and even had the alternative recipe for 'English' style pancakes, I'd recommend checking it out!

I realised too late that the recipe didn't actually use baking powder - so my cover photo today has that cross as this recipe also used up all my milk, so I couldn't reshoot it either haha

The process

So, I started by adding all the dry ingredients together. Of course, it's always best to sieve the flour!

flour

I always find that sieving flour creates a cloud around the area, oh well, not sure how to stop that happening.

adding in the wet ingredients

After adding in all the dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar), I added in my egg. This step requires you to whisk the mixture and slowly adding in the milk, so a bit hard for taking pictures.

done whisking

After adding all the milk, and whisking until it was smooth, I let it stand for a minute as instructed (also couldn't wait). I saw that the recipe uses butter to fry the pancakes, and I don't normally do that, I usually use oil, but I was excited to try it!

in goes the first

So, after heating up the butter, I added in about 3 tablespoons of mixture!

too quick!

I couldn't wait long enough, and when I flipped it, I was greeted by a pale pancake side. But I continued!

a sign

Soon, this pancake was done, but I noticed that the butter was, definitely too much, and starting to brown. This should have been my sign to stop....

disaster

The pan began to smoke, my second pancake was very brown, and I flipped it all too early (as you can see by the splatter zone). After finishing the pancake, I caved and cleaned my pan, stovetop and decided, best to use oil as usual. Nothing burnt, but it was a bit smokey!

the switch to oil and a beautiful pancake

When I switched to oil, I was greeted by a beautiful pancake side, perfectly brown. This is always my aim when making pancakes, and I rarely get more than one like this.

6 and...

Eventually, my pancake count reached 6, just like the pre-made bottle I had bought! But I wasn't finished.

6 and a bigger one

With the 6, I had been consistently using just 3 tablespoons of mixture for each, but this last one, I was tired, hungry and wanted it to be over. I used about 5 tablespoons? of mixture, and a spatula to empty the bowl into the pan. Resulting in a bigger final 7th pancake!
I think I could have done 8 total if I had stayed consistent, but oh well!

Hope you like it!

Wow! These look delicious!

What's your preferred pancake topping?

Thank you! I often like sugar and lemon juice really, how about you ? :D

That sounds quite nice, I usually go with chocolate spread or honey!
