The Steemit Book Challenge - Month 1

in #reading7 years ago (edited)

If you're reading this you've survived 2017. Congratulations! Now your next goal is to live through 2018 while reading some books along the way.

The Steemit Book Challenge

First off this year, I'd like to introduce the Steemit Book Challenge! Starting today, every month I'll post a topic for you to read a book in, along with a list of free books that would qualify for the challenge. You can read a book I listed or any other that meets the challenge's requirements. Next month, when I post the next challenge, you can comment on the post with the book(s) you read for this challenge. You can suggest a topic for future challenges in the comments below!

This month's challenge is to read a book that was translated into English.

It's always good to broaden your horizons and to read books that help you to understand another culture. I want to challenge you to pick up a book from another country (and perhaps another time) and look at life from a different perspective. I hope you enjoy your read!

Suggested (Free) Books

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (Russia)
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (Russia)
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Russia)
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (France)
Ninety-Three by Victor Hugo (France)
Under Sentence of Death by Victor Hugo (France)
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (France)
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Spain)

For more ideas you can visit this list

Goodreads

If you are a bookworm and don't use Goodreads, check it out.
Goodreads is a social media site for books. I use it to keep track of my read books and organize them into lists. It's also a great place to read book reviews and find a new book. If you sign up now you can get off to a good start by setting your reading goal and using Goodreads to find a book.

You can sign up at goodreads.com

Good Luck!

I hope you can find an enjoyable book to read this month! And remember: suggest a topic (or two) for future challenges in the comments below!

The Steemit Book Project was started by @carn and its goal is to make books more available to everyone. All the profits of this and any other post by @steemitbooks will be used to buy books to donate to Open Library. For more info about the project and ways you can help read the project's introduction post.

I love this challenge idea, @steemitbooks! And I love that you have provided links to some free suggestions for the challenge, and also a link to more suggestions.

I have read Les Miserables, and Don Quixote already, so will choose a different one. I've used your link to join Goodreads, too.

I’ve upvoted and resteemed this post as my daily post promotion for people whom I have previously curated.
Cheers!

I've done the Goodreads challenge for the last several years, so I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Love the idea of this set of challenges, so I will try and incorporate it into my reading list. Get my out of my genre rut. :)

Hi @steemitbooks 😄
Do you say what you are gonna read now in the comments? That way it would give more ideas too?

I'm planning on reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Might be kinda long for some people though 😉

Just curious, why did you flag the post?

I don’t think I flagged! I’ll check.

I’m going to read ‘a very long engagement’ by Sebastien Japrisot.

Apologies. I must have hit the flag (I’m on mobile). I’ve removed it. X

Np, I figured it was an accident :)

That book looks like a good read. Hopefully my college's library or Open Library has it!

I would like to read Les Miserables, heard lots of good reviews about it.
Idea for another challenge: reading a graphic novel (persepolis, maus, etc.) :D
