Secure Remote Access with remote.it

in #raspberrypi6 years ago

Setting up IoT networks can be a fun and rewarding experience. One of the biggest challenges, however, can be gaining access to your devices from outside your home network. With remot3.it you can easily and securely connect to your Raspberry Pi's local services (like VNC, SSH, and even Node-Red) without any messy port-forwarding or domain registering. Follow the instructions below to get started, or scroll to the bottom of the post to follow along on LBRY!

Create an account

First head over to https://remote.it/ and create an account. It's free and you'll need one to register your device and remotely log in.

Installation

Open a terminal on you Pi or connect over SSH. Once logged in, you may consider running the following commands in a tmux environment. Click here for more information about tmux. Updating your system is always a good idea too! You can try this script on CodePy's GitHub account.
Use this command to install the remot3.it service:

sudo apt install connectd

Setup

After installation completes, start setup by running sudo connectd_installer
Follow the in-terminal instructions to log in and select which services you want to access. Also be aware that like most linux programs, the terminal will not display your password being typed. Watch the video below for more information.

Access

Use the web portal or their new Android and iOS apps to access your device. To reconfigure which ports can be accessed, simply re-run sudo connectd_installer and log in with your same account. If you have a Linux computer, their Android app is also compatible with Anbox.
