The need to CHANGE
Shalini returned home after school. But she wasn't happy. What happened to her?
'Ma, does black colour depict evil?' She had a stern look on her face. Not the typical childish one.
'No, who said this to you.', her mother replied. 'Is there anything bothering you Shalini. Tell it to me now.'
'Nope, everything's fine. I was just curious to know.'
Shalini left her mother in despair that what might have happened to her.
She went to her room. Switched on the lights. Then looking into the mirror, she wondered that how beautiful the world would be for her if she wasn't dark. She felt it was her mistake to take birth in this world because only whites have the right to live. Only fair complexioned children have the chance to enjoy the beauty. She was disheartened to the core.
'How could a teacher say this to me. Didn't my parents submitted the school's fee. What if I am dark? I have the right to study. To learn. To live my life', the brave girl in her spoke.
She firmly made a decision. To show the world what she can do? What a dark coloured middle-class girl can do?
Shalini was back to her daily life. She ignored sarcasm, taunts, etc. from others and focused on her studies. The girl cleared her boards with 94%. Whoops
Got her higher education from a prestigious college. Sounds good.
It was a proud momemt for her. And for her family too. But alas! These bloody people.
'What will she do after studying so much? No one is going to marry such an ugly girl. Her marks are of no use. Instead start collecting money for her dowry. Atleast it would fetch her a decent guy.'
It was a moment of despair for her. She was proud of her knowledge, but felt dejected coz of her looks. Her childhood fear started surrounding her thoughts.
'What if she is right? What if I won't get married? How would I live my life alone?'
But yet again, she stood up. Her mother supported her. Shalini was back to her true self. The brave girl was back.
She made her aim to get a good job and support her family. And she was successful in it.
Shalini got a good package from a well-known MNC, which took her life to another level. Her pay silenced her relatives and known ones. Yes, the same aunty who felt what could she do anything without marriage, was silent.
Shalini was determined for her goals. Buying a beautiful house, securing her family's future, and going for a foreign trip. Her dreams were simple and beautiful. But the world isn't an easy place to live.
Maybe her fate was written by God on a gloomy day. Limited happiness and all despairs.
While returning from her office at night, some guys followed her. They got hold of her hand. Shalini tried to get rid of them, but in vain. She shouted for help. Some people went by. They didn't bother to stop. Why? Because she is not their daughter, mother or sister.
Shalini kept crying. The bastards ripped off her clothes. Molested her. Raped her. They were devilish. Maybe something more than that. Brutish.
Shalini was thrown on the streets, uncovered. She wasn't in her senses. She wasn't feeling anything. The bloody maniacs laughed at her and ran away.
She lied there, unconscious. No one bothered to even cover her. A child came, saw her like that, ran and brought her mother with him. Her mother got furious and scolded him. And the lady left her, without doing any help.
She was right. Why should one need to help a stranger? And that too such an intense case.
The next day, police found her and immediately informed her parents. They took her to hospital for treatment. She was not much injured, but the pain and fear in her mind was deeper than the outer bruises. A successful girl was brought in that stage. A girl who was set to reach new heights was stopped before she could take off for her journey.
This time Shalini was broken. She was left with no power to think, speak or do anything. It was a body with no soul in it.
And guess what? The society cameto her rescue. To help her. But how?
By blaming her. By holding her job and attitude responsible for the rape. In their view, a girl should be kept within the walls of the house and should wear clothes covering her whole body.
Slow claps.
Shalini suicided within a week of this incident. Her family was left in utter pain and despair, with a void that can't be filled.
Finally, who wins? Our society. Because they were true in their sayings.
We underestimated the girl in her childhood. Called her dark, called her useless. Yes, she is a waste.
We even undermined her value even when she cleared her education from a prestigious college. Because she can't get married. Yep, she isn't anything without a man.
We didn't helped her when she was being raped. When she was shouting to save herself from those bloody goons, no one gave a fuck to the pain she was going through. Yes, what's the need to help her? We don't know her.
And even after the tragedy, we didn't stop. We were continuing bitching over the thing that it was her mistake. She was wrong at going to job, wearing those revealing clothes. Yes, she was wrong. Isn't she?
Think atleast once people. Well, the time is over to even think. We need prompt action. The government can't do anything unless we act strictly.
We need to change. We need to stfu when speaking such nonsense about a girl. These words when spoken, demoralise the girl child. She feels inferior in this world. Never make them feel down for their complexion or gender.
Now when the girl achieve success in her education. Well, we still rub our ass in the matter again. We make her believe that her education is useless until she gets a fair looking rich stud to marry. Yes, it's true. Howsoever we show our open views, we are still creepy from inside. We still degrade girls.
And it doesn't ends here. Then we blame her for rape when the men are at real fault. But I think even they aren't wrong.
They did such things because our society teach girls to be in so-called limits, but never teach boys to respect girls. If anything happens to a girl, she is wrong for sure. That's our mentality.
A rape victim never is a victim until and unless we victimize her. We make her feel so cheap with our venomous words that she is forced to suicide.
What are you thinking? Change today, before it's too late. There's your sister, mother or daughter too, living in the same society.
Always remember. Karma is a bitch.
Cheers :)
