It's not who follows but how many.
Steemit in it's current beta format offers everything you would by default find in a normal wordpress setup if you were to merge it with Facebook.
It doesn't however have a way to add small banter. A place where people can express themselves free from burden in such ways that I've only found on sites like 4chan.
I think if Steemit really wants to make a dent in the social networking climate it's going to have to offer some unique functions that aren't found in sites like Twitter or Facebook.
