Random Games Week 12- "Your Childhood Books!", brought to us by @kristyglas

in #randomgames6 years ago

A good day to you, fellow Steemian, wherever you are 🙃🌐!

This is my entry to @kristyglas' Random Games Week 12- "Your Childhood Books!".

As I was reading through the entries for the contest on @kristyglas' post, the first one that caught my eye and got me really excited was the first entry there from @trisquelwhare who wrote:

but I did want to share them with you as they brought me a lot of joy as a youngster. The author is Enid Blyton, and I read a lot of her books back then, including the Famous Five and Secret Seven series. ........ The lesser-known Blyton series The Faraway Tree was one of my favourites, and I read them over many times.

Hey!!! Me toOOO!!! Hi-five @trisquelwhare!! Very nice to "meet" you! I loveeee Enid Blyton and I absolutely loveeee The Faraway Tree series!!! Fortunately for me, I still have some of the books after I dug through my treasure trove (thank you @kristyglas for the heads-up 😁)

There was the Faraway Tree series, the Wishing Chair series, the Mr. Pink Whistle series and a collection of stories in the Chimney Corner Stories. Unfortunately, some went missing over the years but I am really happy to have found these babies 😍.

Just like @trisquelwhare, I found so much joy reading her books. They really are like the happiest of all books for little children. They were easy to read, easy to understand, comes with big letters 😁 and every story has a lesson to be learnt which are fantastic for growing children 🤩.

Each time I read the Faraway Tree series (yes, I read them many, many times, just like @trisquelwhare 😁), I would imagine myself walking up the tree, meeting Moonface, Silky, Saucepan and all the other "residents" living there, excited to find out which "Land" has landed itself above the Faraway Tree. The stories never fail to bring me with them, up above the tree, into every "Land" with its own magic that brought much happiness as well as challenges and learning. The stories truly helped in developing an imaginative mind 🦄🌳🌝.

Here's a little, teeny, weeny snippet of a book from the series, the Magic Faraway Tree:

Then, there were also the fairy tale stories that I really enjoyed reading:

I am definitely one of those who has a soft heart for "Once upon a time..." beginnings and a "Happily ever after..." endings (even until today 😊).

Here is a little twist to the Snow White and the Seven Dwarves story:

Notice how brown the pages are? Lots of good old memories 😊.

Then, there were the comics like Archie, Beano and this one:

Hehe. I can't help but smile looking at all these books, they bring back such happy memories of my happy little moments with the books.

Thank you @kristyglas for bringing us back to our happy childhood days. I always look forward to your contests 🤪.

I love to read children's books but this is an author I've never heard of! Thank you for sharing your love of her books, I will look for them!
I also love "Once upon a time..." books!

**Edited to add - I went looking for her books on Amazon, starting with The Faraway Tree and found several sets of her books. But when I started reading the comments I found they had been 'updated' and republished in 2014. Reviewers said they'd been changed from the original versions, making them more acceptable to a modern audience and especially noting that the names 'Dick' and 'Fanny' had been changed. So now I will be visiting used bookstores to try to find the original versions.

Oh it is really cool that you went looking for her books after reading my post! Thank you! And thank you for dropping by and commenting :) So happy to find a fellow Steemian who loves "Once upon a time..." books too!
Oh darn, they dropped those names? Wished I could lend you my books, though I am missing some in the series. I need to dig further my "treasure trove". They must be somewhere.
And thank you for updating the comment with your adventure. I hope you get to find the original versions. It would be different to read the updated versions knowing they are updated and republished versions.

I was all ready to hit the 'buy' button before I started reading the comments! They were really eye-opening! SO many huge fans of her books making negative comments about the revised versions. Apparently they changed some names and 'British' references, as well as abridging one of the books. I came back to warn other people who might have been as intrigued as I was to read them!

I also use Bookfinder.com, a very good resource for old and out-of-print books. They had the 2012 and 2014 sets. Then I looked for first editions and then hardbound. If you have those then you really do have a 'treasure trove'! They are worth serious money now!

My favorite children's books (as a child) was my mother's collection of The Mother West Wind books by Thornton Burgess. They were lost in a move. My husband collects rare books and he went on a mission to find me a set, which he did, and bought another set for my mother!

I also loved the 'rainbow' fairy tales. But I only got interested in the classics when I was an adult! The Oz books, Alice in Wonderland, The Boxcar Children, can't remember all of them now, but I enjoyed them so much.

Thank you for bringing up these good memories, and giving me a new author to search for!

Wow.. luckily you didn't hit the Buy button! That would have been a bummer. Oh I have heard of Bookfinder.com. I need to check which years are mine. But I think mine is in the 80s. Thanks for letting me know. Ah, I have not heard of The Mother West Wind books, I will check them out :)
Hehe.. yah.. As I grew up, I enjoyed classics like Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice, etc. Those gave a lot of aaaahh moments :)
Thanks for giving me a new author to search for too! :) You have a good weekend there @donna-metcalfe :)

Read many of the books by Enid blyton, but never saw the Faraway Tree - maybe I'll check for it on the web...

Thanks - and yes, nostalgia is a beautiful part of life

Thank you @arthur.grafo :) Oh yes, please do check it out. I really love the Faraway Tree as a kid and interestingly enough, I still get excited over the books now :D

I only have one of the Famous five books. A friend was throwing away books from his children's past and I grabbed it. Also kept a few other treasures,

I grew up in one country but then we moved to another and everything was thrown away, even my favourite Dan Dare (Eagle), Captain Marvel comics and so on.

That's life...

Oh darn.. I too lost some after moving a couple of times. I think some were sent for recycling. But I can't remember exactly. So, there is still hope :D
You have a good weekend there @arthur.grafo :)

Hey, high five right back at ya' @marblely. ✋

I think this series was also quite influential in forming my early opinions about the protection of heritage trees ... you never know who might be living in one of them! 😄

Thanks for the mention, and all the best for your entry in @kristyglas' competition.

I used to love reading enid blyton books when I was a kid, I forgot about them omg. I might have to get them out to read to the sprogs, If they love them as much as I did then it has then been past to another generation.

Hehe.. ya try it!! They might love it too :) Aah.. you know what, I think I'm going to read them again, though I am missing some books. Thanks for dropping by and commenting! :)

Well they are great childhood memories, I need to find them, I think they are in my mums loft space so when I go there on saturday I will have to give it a rummage to see what I can find. :D

Good luck on finding them :D Happy weekend to you!
