Girija Devi was born on May 8, 1929, in the house of a Bhumihar landlord Ramdev Rai in Varanasi. His father used to play harmonium and he taught music to Girija Devi Ji. In time, he started taking lessons in singer and Sarangi player Sarju Prasad Mishra from the age of five, kyal and step singing. At the age of nine years, he also acted in the film, and continued his studies of the music styles of music in the heart of his Guru Shri Chand Mishra.

Girija Devi (8 May 1929 - 24th of October, 2017) was a famous Indian classical musician from Banaras households. They used to sing classical music and sub-classical music. They have contributed a lot to refine and make Thumri singing popular. Girija Devi was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2016 and Padmabhushan in the field of art by the Government of India in 1989.

During the ITC Music Research Academy in Kolkata in the 1980s and during the 1990s, Banaras worked as a member of the Faculty of Music in Hindu University, and he taught many students to preserve music music.
