Why does the rain smell so good?

There are a few odors associated with the fallen rain that people find pleasant.

One of them occurs when the rain is the first time after an extended period of drought. Then a chemical reaction occurred, which was first observed in 1964 by two Australian scientists exploring the smell of wet water. During dry periods, some plants emit oily extracts, and when they fall, they are released into the air. In addition, it is possible that the odor is due to the separation of produced chemicals from a type of bacteria that lives in the soil.

Another aroma that we associate with the rain is ozone. During a thunderstorm, the lightning can separate the oxygen and nitrogen molecules into the atmosphere, and they can be reunited in the form of nitric oxide. This substance interacts with other chemicals in the atmosphere to form ozone that has a strong odor, slightly reminiscent of chlorine. So when someone says they smell the approaching rain, they probably mean the ozone brought down, which the wind removes from the clouds to the surface.
