BANGER OF THE WEEK: The New Jim Crow
After a slew and blizzard of emotional browbeating and finger-wagging, it's refreshing to read the bible (or hadith, as the case may be) of the antiracist. This book outlines that black people are targeted through an education-to-prison pipeline that permanently brands them as second class citizens for mostly non-violent crime.
It's well-argued and sourced, despite the book glazing over the glaring discrepancy between violent crime committed by blacks vs by whites. However, the completely subjective over-policing of primarily drug charges among blacks is something I find myself in agreement with and would like to eliminate at the bud.
The book has great points and offers a nuanced view of race in the US, but has been given a bad name by loudmouth automatons looking for resources. A noble book like this that looks problematic policies and institutions in the eye, without insisting that people desist from microaggressions, is a shoo in for BANGER OF THE WEEK.
