Rabies vaccination - symptoms, prevention and treatment

Rabies is a viral disease. Rabies is a fatal disease that, as of today, has no treatment other than prevention. An infected animal will experience many anguish until its death. However, the infection can be stopped before the symptoms appear, so in any case of a bite by an unknown animal, which we are not sure is immune, medical treatment should be obtained as soon as possible.

Rabies affects not only dogs, but also cats, humans, foxes, jackals, wolves and more. The disease is transmitted by saliva, usually bite. Rabies vaccine actually stops infection in the case of a bite.

Did you know? There are only 3 countries in the world that have successfully eradicated rabies. For this reason, every dog that comes to the territory of one of these countries must be in the agreement to ensure that it does not have the disease: New Zealand, Britain and Australia.

Since dog disease has no treatment or cure, the importance of rabies vaccination to a dog every year, as stated in the law, is critical and can save lives!

It is important to remember that from the time of infection to the onset of symptoms, it can take several days, and even a whole year. During this period, rabies virus spreads throughout the body until it reaches the brain. From the time the signs appear until the animal dies, it will take about 10 days. For this reason, in order to prevent severe agony from the animal, it is customary to sleep. Remember, a rabies vaccine saves lives! Do not give up the annual vaccination.

Rabies vaccine in law
Even prior to the establishment of the state, there was a mandatory law called the Rabies Ordinance, and until 2000, rabies vaccination was done under this law. In 2002, a law was passed in Israel that regulates dogs: When a dog reaches the age of 3 months, its owners are legally obligated to vaccinate rabies and to repeat the vaccination each year. Rabies vaccination is a condition for renewing a license to keep the dog.

During the first rabies vaccination, the dog will also be marked with an electronic chip inserted under its skin and allowing its owner to be identified if the dog is lost. Notice that a dog that is found without a chip will be considered a wandering dog and will be quarantined.

And a little history
The rabies vaccine was developed at the end of the 19th century by Louis Pasteur, who is known to us from the field of milk pasteurization and his research in the field of bacteria. Louis Pasteur, the father of microbiology, found in 1880 that the cause of the disease was not a bacterium. Louis Pasteur has experimented with infected dogs with weakened strains of the virus. One day a child came to his house and was bitten by a sick, wandering dog. Pasteur gave him the experimental test, and a few days later, the boy's life was saved. And from there ... everything is history.
