Cancer patients, survivors, family and friends owe her a 'thank you!'-Story and quotes of Marie Curie.
I was scrolling through my Chemistry textbook -General Chemistry by Ebbing and Gammon ,when I stumbled upon a short story of Marie Curie.
Marie Sklodowska Curie, born Polish and a French citizen by naturalization spent her 67 (1867-1934) years on earth creating a legacy for herself which has lasted tens of years after her death.
Like many other legends and great scientists, she has a not-so-perfect childhood, having lost her mother at age 10 and being left with father who wasn't capable of funding her education. Her teaching dream became a pie in the sky, knowing that she had no funding for a proper formal education. However, her sister later took her to France where she studied, and never stopped studying.
Due to her hard work, she made notable and record-breaking contributions to the world of science, despite being initially discouraged by other scientists, and after losing her husband in a carriage accident.
Below are some of her achievements and contributions
Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry (1903 and 1911 respectively)
First and only person ever to win a Nobel Prize in 2 different subjects.
First woman ever to win a Nobel Prize .
First female lecturer and professor at the Sorbonne University, France .
First female science celebrity.
Discovery of radioactivity, and the elements Radium and Polonium, which has contributed greatly to mordern health care.
During the World War 1, she also promoted the first use of the X-ray (which was discovered by a fellow scientist). It was used for picturing injuries and fractures on injured fighters.
Today, Marie Curie's statue has a place in the Celebrity Garden beside other great scientists of her time. Many organisations have been named after this heroine, and many scientists all over the world are furthering her researches to keep her legacy going for more and more years to come. She impacted so many lives in her short time on earth.
Below are my five best Marie Curie quotes:
Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.
A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician : he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairytales.
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more so that we may fear less.
I was taught that the way of progress was neither swift nor easy.
One never notices what has been done: one can only see what remains to be done.
Marie Curie is one of my favourite scientists not because she's female like me, but because of her selflessness for humanity and because of her fearlessness when it came to achieving her goals. She died in Paris (1934) from *aplastic anemia*, which is believed to have been caused by her life long exposure to radioactive elements.
Today, Marie Curie's set path in radioactivity is what has sustained and even eliminates cancer in thousands of cancer patients all over the world. Now here's a scientist who gave her life for other lives.

DON'T FORGET TO STAY 'CURIE'OUS ABOUT IDEAS, AND NOT PEOPLE!! Have a nice weekend, and happy Eid to all my Muslim friends out there!
