A number of organizations have paid lawyers and volunteer lawyers who show up at the children's court dates. Each child winds up appearing in immigration court to have to defend the fact that they are an asylum seeker fleeing persecution, not just immigrating. Even babies! They are given no lawyers and expected to make their cases for themselves. So the volunteer lawyers are their only hope.
