I looked at this for 5 mins and melted my brain. I figured that the method to working this out is to figure out what each number can transform into but I really can't be bothered.
your answer is not right, number 9 have stick below, you need one more stick to do 9 from 4, you put stick on top, but also need to put below to make 9 from 4, i posted answer you can see that the right answer is : 9 + 3 - 4 = 8, where 9 is made from 8 removing one match, that is correct 9! My wife do this in 3 minutes)

Can i just move the minus between 3 - 4 and overlay it on the equals symbol?
So the equation would be
8 + 34 ≠ 0
Or is that cheating somehow?

from 8 one match goes to 0

Oops my mistake as I failed to look at a digital image of 9. No need to insult though... jeez.
