Struggling to get it back? 3 things stopping YOU!

It's that time of week when I used to support great content with #throwbackThursday #tbt so here goes; an oldie from 2015, originally posted on LinkedIn.

Over the last few years I've worked with some incredible and inspiring individuals. Many have been self-made Millionaires; in a former life.

I've worked with companies that have been at the top of their game, with Business Owner's having the car, the house and the holiday home or two to show for it.

But what happens when it's gone?

What happens when the revenue changes, the houses get sold and the prestige car becomes a fuel efficient alternative? It may all sound materialistic, but it's more than that ... it's so much more than that!

Sadly now passed, I once worked closely with a wonderful award winning Film Director who 'typically' couldn't get over his past. Once upon a time he could boast wild and exciting stories of private jets and Hollywood but, in his latter years he was struggling to find his feet, to find his purpose and be 'successful' once more.

I recall from my university days, many years ago, when we learned about business complacency and the key case was McDonald's. We learned that this huge corporation had simply failed to keep up with the times. They had become so complacent about their success, they were slow at best to respond to their changing landscape and consumer needs. True or not, the essence of the story stuck with me. Now some 13 years later I face the woe of similar Business Owner's & their companies.

How do I get back?

Is often the unspoken question, however, I feel this is the wrong question. The question isn't about getting back. The question is about what's new going forward. It's about learning to let go, to detach even, from what once was - if you're to reduce and even remove your suffering from losing your past.

Holding on to what once was, is like a footballer carrying a 'sitting duck' goal error from the first 5 minutes throughout a 90 minute game. It is not helpful, it's a heavy weight to carry and distracts his focus.

Every person and company is different, they have their individualities but here are 3 of the common things stopping you from getting IT back.

  1. Looking in the rear view mirror - stop it, it takes up too much of YOUR precious thinking time and removes focus for what's in front of you.

  2. Be responsible - start to understand what YOU got wrong. If you're still blaming things, you'll remain weaker than you could be going forward.

  3. Let it go - accept it happened, be self-compassionate but don't stay stuck. It doesn't matter what money, what benefits, what anything has gone; they've gone.

As Alvin Toffler once said "Change is the only constant". Nothing is fixed. Needs and wants change, we change and we have to adapt effectively to that. It starts with how we think. Mentally holding on to the old, through your beliefs, will come out through your words, which in turn will control your behaviours and ultimately your action or inaction.

Get out of your own way!

It takes time to heal from loss but once you become aware of it, understand it and then accept and release your suffering around it, you can then get it back; YOU that is, the renewed and strong person you once was to create greateness once more.
