37 Ways To Reduce Your Anxiety - #4 Be Prepared
Being well prepared, can help you manage anxious situations. Anxiety is not random, there is always content behind it. By discovering what you need and then being prepared for it, you will have more control over it. Let's use an example to show what is behind anxiety and what can help reduce it.
Tanya Driving Anxiety
Tanya had high levels of anxiety when driving. She didn't like driving alone, she didn't like freeways, she had a fear of getting lost and was driving after work - when she was already feeling stressed. We chatted about what steps would help her be more prepared for driving.
- Plan her route before getting in the car (so she knows where she is going).
- Drive with a passenger in the car, or chat with someone using her bluetooth device.
- When on the freeway, stay in the far lane, so she won't feel pressured to drive fast.
- Eat healthily through the day (this is good for emotions and feeling grounded).
- Don't just drive immediately after finishing work. Take 10 minutes to relax first.
In doing this, Tanya's driving experience is much more relaxed now. She has steps to deal with the reasons she was feeling anxious.
I've created a list of all the things I've done over the last 15 years that have reduced anxiety for myself and for the people I have worked with. I'll share one a day for the next 37 days.
