Have you ever compared your body, your career success, or your life to your neighbours? They appear to have received all the 'lucky breaks' and 'success' that you didn't get.

Comparing yourself to someone else, could be the most disempowering thing you can do. It can lead to anxiety
about yourself and hopelessness about life.

At my lowest, I was under weight, had poor health, nowhere to live, a child turn out not to be mine, just 1 friend and no money. But, when it seems like you have nothing, it is NOT TRUE.

Do you have:

  • A family?
  • People who care about you?
  • At least 1 person who you can care for?
  • A heart that can love?
  • Skills/education?
  • A functioning body?
  • Intelligence?
  • Choices?
  • Opportunities?
  • A fire inside of you that compels you to fight?

When it seems like you have nothing, you may be ignoring the things you do have. Our job is to remind ourselves to be grateful for the blessings we still have, rather than focusing on what is missing or lost.

Some of the characteristics of depression you don't often hear about are:

  • Comparing your life, to a fantasy in your mind.
  • Trying to obtain that which you can't have.
  • Trying to avoid that which is unavoidable.

There is an fantasy picture that we compare life to, when we are depressed... We believe we need to 'have it all' (the perfect husband/wife/kids/life). There is no perfect life out there. The life you have now, is the only one where you can find fulfillment. Set goals that are inspiring to you, not to impress some person you've been comparing to.

I've created a list of all the things I've done over the last 15 years that have reduced anxiety for myself and for the people I have worked with. I'll share one a day for the next 37 days.
