Lesson of the Day Vol. 2

in #psychology7 years ago (edited)

Lesson: The personality each of us has developed over the years to show to the world, actually has very little do do with our true essence.

Thoughts: Each of us, during our formative years will develop a few central coping strategies that help us fulfill our unmet needs. These strategies are a reaction to the things that our household may not have been able to provide us. For some this may be a sense of security, for others it is a feeling of acceptance they never received. None of us got all the right messages, and so we armed ourselves with a personality that was created to make up for what we unconsciously lacked. As such, remember to empathize with the folks who cross your path today, you don't know what brought them to where they are, and those behaviors you can't stand may have been the only thing that kept them safe.

I am not saying we should give everyone a pass for their bad behavior, rather we should try to understand that we all developed bad habits as we were trying to do our best in a difficult world. This is the mask we show the world because it keeps us from harm. Once in a while, we need to stop, take our masks off, and connect as human beings regardless of the armor we don daily.

Powerful Jungian reference 👍
A favorite quote,
from his mouth,
to your eyes,
through my fingers:
"No tree can grow to Heaven,
unless its roots reach down to Hell."

Very powerful. I recently attended a workshop on the shadow and the Enneagram, which was quite enlightening. We did a lot of work to understand the connections between the shadow self and the self we present to the world. Often, it turns out, the things that bother us most in others are the things we repress in ourselves.

Agreed.
In addition, sometimes whatever annoys you the most about those closest to you, often are the same faults you see within yourself, manifested differently through your own behavior and actions (or in this case, inaction).
Looking forward to reading your posts about Enneagrams (a new word in my world 😀).
