Motivation Moment #2 - "Carrot vs. Stick"
The concept of the "Carrot vs. Stick" is rudimentary (basic) to Motivation!
It is a metaphor used for Reward vs. Punishment to inspire a desired behavior.
I grew up attending a public school system, where many a times I experienced the stick (punishment) more than the carrot (reward), hmmm, actually it was also the same at Home!
Was it motivating for me? Sometimes yes and most times...no.
And worst of all, I became immune to it overtime. Even a bigger stick could not motivate me to study harder. How many experienced that?
I was one who in fact preferred being motivated by rewards instead of punishment.
Of course there are times where the Stick was needed. Being a parent, I realize this to be true. Both are essential but a good BALANCE is the Key!
In NLP, the concept is similar and called "Towards" and "Away From" (Meta-Programs).
Famous motivational speaker Tony Robbins shares...
“All human behavior revolves around the urge gain pleasure or avoid pain. You Pull Away from a lighted match in order to Avoid the Pain of burning your hand (Away From). You sit and watch a beautiful sunset because you get Pleasure from the glorious celestial show as day glides into night (Towards).”
So the next time you have the opportunity to Motivate others, perhaps it time to choose a Balanced approach. Maybe a bit of the Stick is needed, but remember to also use the Carrot as well.
