Psychology of mass hysteria

in #psychology7 years ago (edited)

We, humans are social animals, and like any other social animal, we tend to follow others for reassurance. I don't blame humans for this as this came from evaluation as part of defence mechanism. When living in a herd, if one animal spots a danger, it warns everyone else, so that all could safely escape. That's how this has evolved and to some extent it is a good defence mechanism.

Unfortunately, our genetic predisposition has not changed much as compared to the modern social evolution. Social media, stocks and new kid in the block, 'cryptocurrency' is a good example of that. Sometimes we forget that now we are blessed with an evolved brain and until it is not related to flight or fight, we could take some moments to 'think' and make wise decisions. Decisions could be right or wrong, but at least it would be a deliberate choice. As a society, we should always keep ourselves reminding this.
