All We Need Is RockDB
Drama...
Some users are panicking over the "last" (we all know there are many more to come) Steemit controversy.
I would like to outline what I think about it, and why I'm not particularly worried.
Steemit have their own goals. We don't know what they are. Ned said they are a blockchain development company in one of his streams. I don't know what that means. They may be working on a private blockchain. They may be working on SMTs 5.9. they could be cashing out their coins before going bankrupt. WE SIMPLY DON'T KNOW.
But...
But what we do know, is that we have a vibrant community of crypto enthusiasts, with a wide range of talents, and a variying amount of free time. It's an enormous asset. It's something most coins listed on CMC don't have.
We just have a sustainability problem. Steem's infrastructure costs too much to maintain.
If Steemit goes under, how many Steem Apps could continue to run without bleeding money?
The Apps
@burak & @hightouch's fundition?
@heimindanger's dtube ?
@arcange's SteemSQL & SteemitBoard?
@crypto.talk's Partiko?
@prc's Dsound?
@hr1's Steeve App?
@ntopaz? by who ever runs it
@elear's utopian?
We need to be prepared for the worst. Which is, no more full nodes from Steemit Inc.
Less RAM Moe Apps
And minimising RAM usage is how we do that. If a typical Steem user can run a full node from their gaming PC, we become self-sufficient, and then we can focus on building a robust software suit for anyone who wants to use Steem. A long lineup of Steem Apps, if you will.
But unless every HODLING dev will pour their resources into cost reduction, and Steemit indeed kicks the bucket, there won't be a point to adding new features to the aformentioned Steem Apps.
No one will be able to use them, because there won't be a blockchain node to pull data from.
Those tagged and anyone else with sufficient programming skills, am I missing something?
Or reducing RAM on full nodes is Steem's ecosystem top priority for survival at the moment?

100% correct! Steem decentralization, prosperity and survival all boils down to reducing RAM requirements for running an API node. First step is reducing below 128Gb which is what High End Desktop motherboards can handle. Best is below 64Gb.
I have a machine ready to run a full node as soon as that happens.

Me 2
I hope I can run my own little node after RocksDB :-)

More full nodes would be a big first step in making steem more decentralised and removing what seems currently like the weakest link in the chain (pun intended).
I totally agree with your analysis, we are fortunate in the community that has been drawn to this blockchain. Real people who have a diverse range of skills, from Artists to Programmers, from Anarchists to those who believe in Basic Income for all.
From the looks of it, it seems steemit Inc is handing over management of their auto sell orders to gsr who are crypto asset manager that work across exchanges.
If done correctly, it could improve steemit inc's revenues as well as reduce volatility in the steem price by keeping more liquidity in the market. Remember, most steem is staked, so the market volume for steem is quite low.
The bear market won't last forever, I just hope stake holders will be longsighted enough to fund the developments we need rather than try and increase their stacks or game more rewards.
@kabir88
Yes, RocksDB is a huge step forward and I believe it's in the interest of Steemit, Inc themselves so I do believe they work hard on it/give it the highest priority. Looking forward to seeing more people step up as witnesses as costs aren't a huge limitation anymore - it would be a great thing for 'Our Block'!
I agree 101% with everything you wrote @imacryptorick. And this is the answer - opinion I gave to someone who commented on one of my posts regarding the future of apps and this platform.
That is the mentality we need. No app should be depended on others’ stakes...and if they can run a node too then it would have been ideal.
I have the same perspective since I believe that as long as the infrastructure can remain sustainable and witnesses are incentivized enough to run them, the community can continue to generate the demand for the projects that are developed here. However, many of these Dapps will probably need to shift their models to one more sustainable rather than just depending on the reward pool or worst, delegations for their funding. 1 Steem will always be worth 1 Steem so having the community actively engaged is the underlying value creation to move the protocol forward.
