Gaza & The Green Cake:
Gaza, as we all know, is devastated by the war with Israel. Let us not form an opinion here about who's wrong and who's right.
The infrastructure as we all know has been almost destroyed and people wanting to build new houses were pretty much under a hell lot of pressure. The main and the foremost problem was "The Concrete Blocks". Concrete Blocks are the basic building blocks of any building. Brick are basically made of cement, sand & Gravel ( or aggregate). In current scenario of Gaza, all that has to be imported from Israel which highly restricts imports on security grounds. So, people either have to live in destroyed house that you can look through to others houses or wait until Israel lifts the bans and lets people import whatever they need.
In a time of need, a lady named
'Majad Massharawi
', who studied engineering rose to help the people with an amazing idea she had of building concrete blocks from trash. This concrete block is called 'Green Cake
',
a name given by the creator herself and while explaining she said, "It is called 'Green Cake' because it has a lot of voids inside which make it lighter than the ordinary, common in use blocks. Green Cake is made from 'small amount of imported cement, Rubble & Ash' which is all available easily and people don't need to worry about importing stuff and waiting for it to be cleared by the security authorities and get transferred to them. It is actually lighter to carry and is pretty strong when it comes to building structures that are several stories high.
