Scientific, ethical cryptocurrencies: Primecoin, Gridcoin, Foldingcoin, Curecoin and others
I decided to make a quick list and comparison of some cryptocurrencies that contribute to scientific research. It is well known that the Bitcoin protocol wastes a lot of computing power and electricity in order to calculate SHA-256 hashes. These calculations have no purpose other than to secure the Bitcoin blockchain.
Below are listed some of the top scientific cryptocurrencies that are more ethical to mine than bitcoin. All of the coins listed below utilize a part of your computing power for scientific use rather than just pointless SHA-256 calculations.
By mining these coins you can contribute to:
- Astronomy: creating a map of the Milky Way, calculating asteroid paths
- Mathematics & cryptography: finding prime number chains
- Medicinal research: cures for Zika, Ebola, AIDS
- Genealogy: finding cancer genes, mapping the human genome
...among other things!
The coins are ordered by their coinmarketcap.com ranking.
Full disclosure: I own ~250 USD worth of Gridcoin and a tiny amount of DCP. I do not own any of the other coins. Of these coins, my personal favourite is Gridcoin. But I tried to be objective in writing this list. I think mining any of these coins is a better use for your computing power than mining Bitcoin.

Updates to this article:
- 2018-07-20: Various small fixes
- 2018-07-20: Added Riecoin. Updated coinmarketcap rankings of all coins
I think SPARC (Science Power and Research Coin) will change its name to DCC (Distributed Compute Credit) not DCP.
See this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/KingsDS/comments/8ub7ol/some_new_information_about_sparc/
Although DCP might be a better name as they ticker symbol DCC is already taken:

Thanks for the correction!
There is a typo in the first bullet point. Could you please change the word astrology to astronomy?
WOW! hahahaha! That was not intentional! Thanks!!!!
pool.gridcoin.co isn't working, so there is only two pools for gridcoin now
Thanks, I updated the post with this info.
This is a great roundup of some great crypto projects which are actually sustainable. By no means I am saying that these are the "future of crypto" of anything of that degree, but pointless high energy hashing is also not the future.
Funny thing, I attempted to start mining Riecoin because of this post for the fun of it, yet as soon as I actually learned how to get it started, the market for it crashed.
Nonetheless, I learned many things about how the fundamental client of a cryptocurrency generates blocks (in reference to RPC commands such as
getwork
) which was fun. Thanks for telling us about these coins!Congratulations @aquatarkus! You have completed the following achievement on Steemit and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :
