Power outages happen here every winter, and sometimes after summer storms. Plus there's the real risk of fires destroying infrastructure at this point. Alternatives for light and heat are a necessity sometimes, even if not often where you are.

Today I'm sore as I can be from cutting and stacking firewood all day yesterday (yes, I actually do more than write!). Our winters here are usually very disappointing, but if I didn't have an alternate heat source something would happen.
I'd rather have it and never need it than to need it and not have it.
