DIY Bushcraft Knife - Upcycling A Metalworking File #4 All Done :)

in #prepper6 years ago (edited)

Hello EggMinions,

It's finally here folks!!! The in-laws have been away this morning and so I've had a couple of hours free in the garage to finish profiling the knife handle. Without blowing my own trumpet too much, I think I've done a decent job for my first ever knife creation.

I won't drone on as I do plenty of that in the latest video below :)

Something I found the other day after tempering (colour change made it noticeable) might greatly shorten the life of this knife though my esteemed side-kick and father-in-law (BirdManSam) who used to work with steel all the time reckons it's no big issue.

So what am I referring to???

A hairline crack on the spine of the blade. Due the file ridges, I'm unable to establish the depth of the crack but going off the slight darkening of the side at that point after tempering, I'm guessing it could be 6-7mm deep :(

Ah well, what will be will be folks.

Many thanks to all for following and supporting,...... you know who you are ;)

Bye for now,

EggMeister.

I had a think about this and remember snapping a few files years back and the metal being very brittle, this could of caused the crack, try it with a better metal like an old car part and it wont crack i would say, still love the workmanship and result.

I've snapped a couple to over the years, the sacrifice that's made for hardness unfortunately. Yeah, I think this crack is historic and just missed by me due to file being dark and rusty to start with. Old leaf springs are suppose to be a good source I believe.

Thanks for your nice words, I was expecting a wonky blade edge and all sorts of issues with a first try LOL.

I'll be hitting the woods soon and testing it out for batoning, feather-sticks and might even flint n steel it down the spine for the fire. (I'll sand the spine after to remove the strike wear).

I think it will hold up for most jobs and it looks pro : ) first attempt and way better than many people could craft <3

Ahh, you're too kind NC4OM :)

[blush]

Awesome job done! : )

Thank you, I'm really happy with this first attempt :)
