Difference between 1985 to 2017 education system in India

I still remember that when I was in 4th class, I never read a single character on English language. We uses Slate (in hindi takhti). We were taught in proper Hindi and Sanskrit and as I remember there were nothing out of Indian history or some tables or alphabets of Hindi (i.e. अ, आ). but today I was reading a book of my son it contains a chapter about Mr. J. C. Boss who was a famous Indian Scientist all about him was written in English after seeing that I am in a fix that how he is managing his studies although I am not able to reply his queries at this class stage.
